Lake George, Kings County Wildfire Out Of Control
Wildfire Season Extended To October 31
The full burn ban currently in effect in Annapolis County will be maintained, and daily burn restrictions will continue to be enforced in all other counties until the end of the month, with violations incurring a $25,000 fine.
Wildfire season generally runs from March 15 to October 15. However, in 2016, the season was extended by a week due to drought conditions. In 2015, the season was shortened with a delayed start following a winter of heavy snowfall. The daily burn restrictions, including the continued ban in Annapolis County, apply to open fires such as campfires, bonfires, brush fires, fires in chimeneas, and any other fire that is not enclosed and uses wood as fuel. Unlike gas or charcoal fires, sparks could escape from an open wood fire and cause a wildfire. The restrictions do not apply to non-woodburning devices like charcoal and gas barbeques and gas stoves, which can be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Lake George Fire Update as of 15:00, October 1st: The Lake George wildfire in Kings County remains uncontrolled. Water bombers are actively engaged in reducing its intensity and protecting structures. Heavy machinery is being utilized to create fire breaks where safe to do so, and structural protection assets are deployed near structures.
The Lake George wildfire is a small fire relative to the significant air support deployed. Two helicopters landed in a nearby field approximately 45 minutes ago due to the high number of air assets involved, resulting in crowded airspace. Water bombers are operating on both sides of Aylesford Road, with most homes and structures located east of the fire. Although significant fire activity is not currently reported on the east side, water bombers are making precautionary drops in that area at this time.
Firefighting efforts are currently hindered by challenging conditions, yet crews are dedicated to limiting the fire's spread wherever possible. Today's weather conditions will not improve.
Supplementing the resources outlined in this morning's update, two Newfoundland planes augmented the fight today, and two Quebec planes executed swift strikes late this afternoon.
