Brian Teepell/USPA 24 News - 11:45: On October 4, yesterday afternoon, Canning fire personnel responded to reports of smoke visible across the Bay, near Baxters Harbour, and seen from Scott's Bay (Kings County). Upon arrival in the area, crews confirmed the smoke.
Firefighters deployed a drone to assess and confirm the fire's location, noting that the smoke calmed during the examination.
A small woods fire was eventually verified, and later in the day, a helicopter carried out several water bucket drops before landing due to darkness. The Canning fire department continued to monitor the fire overnight using their drone.
Firefighters from Canning and Greenwich were dispatched to the scene this morning. (Sunday, October 5th) The deployment of a helicopter has been deemed unnecessary at this time. Crews are working in tandem with DNR representatives to fully extinguish the fire. Port Williams and Wolfville Fire are on standby for Canning should additional emergencies arise. The extent of assistance provided by assets or personnel from these stations on scene is currently unknown.
Presently, crews are exerting a high degree of control over this fire. Conditions in the woods remain extremely arid.
Update Monday, October 6th, 2025; The small wildfire that ignited at Baxters Harbour on Saturday evening was contained yesterday (Sunday) morning. The fire's estimated size is 0.1 hectare. The crews' prompt and effective response, as well as their ongoing efforts to fully extinguish the fire, are acknowledged with gratitude.
